Building a ladybug using Morphic ui elements in Pharo (inspired by pure CSS images)

When I first started learning CSS, I came across an amazing tutorial for making Pure CSS images. Pure CSS images are cute little characters that have been drawn using pure HTML elements that have been styled into different colored shapes using CSS.

Making CSS images like this really helped me to understand how to change the shape of, add gradients to, layer (with z-index) and position (absolute/relative) HTML elements. These skills were transferable to web page layouts.

I am going to use this same approach to learn how to use Morphic, which allows you to make graphical interfaces in Pharo. I absolutely love Pharo as a language, so I want to learn how to build a user interface that looks amazing.

Ladybug

The first pure Morphic image I'm going to create is a Ladybug. In order to make this, I have to know how to make circles and half circles, color those circles in and position them exactly where I want them to be. I also need to be able to add a border bottom to each of the red circles so that when they are positoned together, it looks like the wing seam line that runs down the ladybug's back.

I learned a lot about the capabilities of Pharos graphical interface Morphic by trying to create this ladybug. I discovered some problems with border radius and that it is difficult to make shapes like half-circles. However, I was still able to create a ladybug and could spend some time writing my own methods to deal with these problems down the line.

Ladybug body

After failing to make two half circles, the next thing I tried was making a square with the border radius set high on to of the corners, which is another way to make a semi-circle. After a lot of exploring, I found that you could target which corners you wanted to add a border radius to by sending the 'roundedCorners:' message to the rectangle, with an array as an argument. The array values 1 and 4 targeted the top left and top right corners.

To set the border radius, you have to create a new instance of the RoundedBorder class and set it's cornerRadius instance variable value to anything between 1 and 8. Then you send this as an argument inside the 'borderStyle:' message that is sent to the element you are changing the border radius for.


  elem borderStyle: (RoundedBorder new cornerRadius: 8) .

The problem with this is that the cornerRadius message does not allow you to make a fully rounded border radius. An 8 pixel border radius is the maximum you can do in Pharo without writing one yourself. For now, this is a limitation I have found when it comes to styling UI elements.

I ended up making a big red circle instead of two seperate half circles. I made the circle by writing the following code:

Ladybug's head

After making the ladybug's body, I made another slightly smaller black circle for the head, positioned it to the center of the body and pushed it down until only the top half of the circle peeked out from behind the body. I moved the head creation commands before the body creation commands so that it would appear below the body when displayed on the World.

Note: I didn't set the border color to transparent here because by default the border is black, which matches the color of the head.

Ladybug's wing seam

To make the wing seam, I used the 'Morph' class to create an instance of a rectangle. Much like every element in HTMl, every UI elment in Pharo is rectangular shaped by default. There is a Rectangle class in the Morphic Base Class, but it is greyed out (I think because it's automatically being used, but not too sure on the greying out reason).

Ladybug's spots

Finally, I made four tiny black polkadots to form the ladybug's spots. As I was using the Playground to make this ladybird, I just duplicated them and modified their positioning instead of using a block or something to reuse the code. One of the dot examples is included below.

Final Thoughts

I thought it would be cool to have a bunch of different color squares shown below the ladybug, which would allow user's to change it's color. We'd just have to target the ladybug variable and change it's fillStyle to the current color being clicked, but that is something to do another time.

I'd like to improve this ladybug by nesting the elements inside each other somehow so that the inner elements are positioned relative to the body.

Finally, building this ladybug helped me understand the capabilities of Pharo's graphical interface Morphic a little better. While there are a few limitations, it looks like there is also a fair amount of freedom for building user interfaces that have a bit of personality. Looking forward to exploring this more.
